I personally have had several moments in the past year where I wondered if anyone in Congress had read the epic novel "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. I am not a Rand-worshipper, but I thoroughly enjoyed the book and her philosophy as it relates to individuals with innate talent. Now with the economic craziness, and the new president - I find some very odd parallels to Atlas Shrugged in our government.
1. Wesley Mouch is essentially an Economic Dictator - rising to power by emergency powers given by Congress because of a "crisis." Wasn't Mouch the Treasury Secretary?
2. The increasing Socialism in other countries is putting a strain on the American economy, and making its citizenry clamor for Socialism at home. (Not realizing that SOMEONE has to work SOMEWHERE)
3. The Pirates off of Somalia! Holy crap, I would freak out if I found out that they were led by a blonde Scandinavian.
I thought this would be a fun topic to start out with... what do you think?
Blame it on narcissism...
January 21, 2009 - 5:36pm — BeowulfThere is a tendency in the United States to condemn those with innate talent of any sorts. Whether it's intellectual, athletic, or the like, people tend to be envious of others more often than not. I believe it's a flaw in thinking that is inherent in our society. Most people in the US, who have been pampered for their entire lives, are prone to narcissism. The problem with a self-centered outlook is the fact that a person forgets their place in the universe. It's as if the majority of the population are acting like toddlers by wanting everything their way, but not willing to put forth the effort to obtain it. So, in looking at another person's talents, most people don't say, "wow, I bet that person has worked very hard to achieve that." Instead, the common response is condemnation of another person's skills due to entitlement. I believe narcissism is the key issue afflicting our society at the moment. A fundamental philosophical outlook on life needs to be changed in the minds of most Americans.
Any system, whether it is government or business, becomes corrupted over time. No matter how pure intentions were at the birth of such a system, over time, people will learn the system and how to exploit it...and because no system is perfect, it happens.
And the pirates off of Somalia are doing what they always do. My question is if they bag a big cruise ship, where do they think they’re going to hide with that thing?
interesting
